Ich hab nen Koffer/Vintage suitcases

Da war ich also gestern auf dem Recyclinghof und hab ein bisschen was weggebracht. Bei der zweiten (sic!) Fuhre, hatte dann der dortige Hofladen offen und ich ging rein um ein bisschen zu stöbern. Eigentlich wollte ich schon mit Einkochtopf, die 135ste abziehen, als einer der Mitarbeiter mit diesen beiden Schönheiten reinkam:

In Germany, we have so called recycling depots. They are a local civic waste collection point, operated by the city or town. Attached to ours is a social project. A little shop where formerly unemployed workers sell those items that are still in good condition or somehow interesting or nice. Some smaller furniture, mostly pots and pans and some books and vintage LPs and stuff. Yesterday, I brought some waste from our house to the depot and when I came the second time, the shop was open. I love to browse and rummage among the old stuff and sometimes I find nice and/or useful things. Yesterday, I already was about to leave with oversized dye pot no gazillion, when one of the staff carried these beauties into the shop:

Zwei alte Lederkoffer, ich schätze sie auf mindestens 50 bis 60 Jahre, in wirklich gutem Zustand. Ich konnte nicht anders und musste sie sofort mitnehmen.

Der große Koffer ist ca 70 x 20 x 40 cm und der Kleine ca 60 x 30 x 15 cm. Ecken sind leicht angestoßen, die Metallschlösser haben ganz leichten Flugrost, ansonsten sind sie nur angestaubt. Von den diversen Reisen des oder der Vorbesitzer befinden sich noch Bahnaufkleber (der niederländischen Bahn in Richtung Den Haag) und andere, kleinere Aufkleber drauf und die üblichen Koffermarkierungen, die bis in die 1970er so bei der Bahn gemacht wurden.

Two, rather old leather suitcases. I estimate the age of at least 50 to 60 years, but they are in really good condition.

The larger one is ca 70 x 20 x 40 cm and the smaller one ca 60 x 30 x 15 cm. The corners are slightly used, the metal closures have some rust bloom and there are souvenirs from the travels of the previous owner/s. Some paper stickers from several train travels, like the large one from netherland railway with Den Haag written on it, and some other markings that were usual till the 1970s.

sind sie nicht wunderschön? Ich kann nicht sagen, ob ich sie tatsächlich zum Verreisen verwenden werde. Eigentlich fahre ich dazu viel zu selten weg und wenn dann meistens doch mit dem Rucksack. Aber ich könnte sie mir auch als Aufbewahrung für Websachen vorstellen. Mal schauen. Jetzt werde ich sie erst einmal reinigen und fetten.

aren't they wonderful? I have no idea, if I will they ever use for travelling. I'm not much of a traveller and if I go on tour, I usually take my backpack. But I can imagine them as storage for weaving stuff or such. We wait and see. Right now, I will clean them and grease the leather a bit afterwards.

Good luck with those old suitcases. It really gives me a jolt when people talk about items used in the 60's and 70's as being old. That's when I was young and I guess the truth is that now I am getting old but I still feel young in spirit.
